On May 3rd the Pattonville Fire District partnered with the Pattonville School District, Maryland Heights Police Department, SSM Depaul Health Center, Hoods towing, and Collier Funeral home to Bring Operation Prom Safe to approximately 500 high school students. The event was a docudrama that brought the dangers of drinking and driving on prom night to the students. Student actors from Pattonvilles’ theatre department were dressed in prom attire and placed in wrecked cars to simulate a traumatic motor vehicle accident. Fire District vehicles and personnel then extricated the students by removing doors and roofs. The students were immobilized, and treated by ambulance personnel. The fire district crews then removed a mock student fatality and placed her in a body bag in front of the stunned onlookers. The program then shifted into the auditorium where students listened to presentations given by Maryland heights police, a Trauma Surgeon, and the Assistant Chief of the Fire District. The timing of Operation Prom safe was the day before Senior Prom and showed students what could happen if bad choices are made. The program serves as an example of doing “Whatever it Takes” to educate and keep high school students in our community safe.
