Fire Prevention Week
The Pattonville Fire Protection District is proud to be in partnership with our schools to provide educational programs in fire safety. Every year, the firefighters and paramedics spend a week visiting area schools to teach students about what to do if there is a fire, how to prevent fires, and how to escape fires. This is also a great time for the children to interact with the firefighters so we usually get to eat lunch with the students!
Smoke Detectors
The Pattonville Fire Protection District is always looking for ways to enhance the life safety of those we are here to protect. One of the best tools in our arsenal is the smoke detector. People with smoke detectors installed and operational in their homes have a much higher chance of surviving a fire in the home. Your Pattonville firefighters visit our residents every year to assure they have working smoke detectors, change the batteries of those who need assistance, and provide new smoke detectors to those who need them.
Fire Extinguisher Classes
Even though extinguishers come in a number of shapes and sizes, they all operate in a similar manner. An easy way to remember the steps to use a fire extinguisher is to remember "PASS."
- Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed.
- Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire. Stand approximately 8 feet away from the fire.
- Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguisher. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop.
- Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, watch it carefully since it may re-ignite!
